Biography

Harriet received her MD from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2003. She completed her family medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center and acupuncture certification at The UCLA Medical Acupuncture Certification for Physicians. She practiced general primary care and acupuncture for 14 years between Duke and UNC clinics and recently started her own integrative/functional medicine practice with acupuncture in Durham (www.drhansell.com).

Harriet started CrossFit in 2014 after a two year long rehab process, without surgery, from a rotator cuff tear.  She knew she needed to strengthen her shoulder because of the continued pain as well as to prevent a future injury. She has been addicted to CrossFit since! Because she did some gymnastics growing up, she loved all the body weight movements and being able to measure progress. She went from not being able to hang from the bar when starting, to strict pull-ups in 3 months, to bar muscle-ups in a 16 month time frame.

Harriet is committed to proper, safe movement. She wants others to push themselves but to not hurt themselves. She truly believes in the science and methodology behind CrossFit and has seen such overall health improvement not only in fitness in athletes, but in mental health, sleep, and objective lab numbers with the addition of CrossFit. She feels that many who feel stuck in a boring routine, not motivated or excited about exercise, needs to explore the amazing community and results seen in CrossFit!

She also dabbles in local masters competitions. She placed first at the War of the WODs individual female scaled masters competition in January 2017, her team placed third at a masters RX doubles FitCon competition in Greenville, NC and  her team placed second at the masters team competition at the Triangle Invitational.
